In August last year we visited Mark Braunias in his studio, the old BNZ Bank in Kawhia.

We discussed a show, which was then scheduled for March 2025, therefore, now. Sadly, as you will likely know, Mark passed away suddenly in December. With the absence of Mark we have installed a group show titled ‘Orange Voodoo’.

Mark was never afraid of big bold colours. Just look at the wonderful presentation he had with Jonathan Smart at the Auckland Art Fair, we were pretty much opposite, just over the aisle. It is fair to say orange had become a strong presence in Mark’s recent palette. Here we have installed a group of works from the stockroom which in some way use this colour. A small tribute to a very fine artist and a thoughtful and generous human being.

The work we have installed from Mark is not for sale, it is from an exchange between Mark & Martin Poppelwell. Mark and Martin were fond of each others practice and had recently showed together at Jonathan Smart in Christchurch late 2023. Their shared intellect and approach to work on full display, as is here amongst other artists who also admired Mark’s art and now, legacy.
