The Sun as a Rectangle
Kirsten Roberts
26 Jun 2026 — 25 Jul 2026
We are pleased to present our second solo exhibition with Kirsten Roberts.
These paintings explore the unstable space between reverence and possession, where contemporary desire begins to resemble worship. In a secular culture that increasingly locates meaning in ownership, it seems that wealth, beauty, productivity and status emerge as modern idols, promising safety, worth, and permanence. The figures depicted here appear suspended within that condition, caught between surrender and acquisition, devotion and display.
Glossy, brittle, and theatrically illuminated, the protagonists occupy flattened, airless spaces that evoke both exhibition and containment. Shifts between physical presence and psychological interiority are shaped by gestures and gazes that feel ceremonial as though compelled by some monstrous calling.
Rather than depicting dramatic events, the works dwell in moments of inertia, a space where little appears to happen, yet something feels subtly unresolved. Through stillness, artificial light, and slight distortions of normality, the paintings evoke a sense of quiet slippage, a world held in suspension, where control, meaning, and selfhood begin to fray.
We will have an opening to welcome the works on Friday, June 26th from 5-7pm. Please join us, Kirsten will be present.
