Derek Henderson has won the Pre-Press Digital category at the Australia & New Zealand Photobook awards for his latest book project ‘Harvest’.

These images were taken over a 5 month period from October 2022 to February 2023 in the small rural town of Ahaura, where the Ahaura and Grey rivers converge on the West Coast of Te Waipounamu, Aotearoa, New Zealand. On a small section of land, approximately a quarter acre and a field down by the Grey River the Filbrun family cultivate a thriving garden where they grow a diverse range of vegetables. Their approach to farming is entirely organic, reflecting their commitment to sustainable practices. They also meticulously collect seeds from their crops to ensure the sustainability of their farm for future seasons. They mainly grow different varieties of tomatoes, cucumbers, pumpkins, onions, melons, potatoes and radishes. When it comes time to harvest most of the produce is preserved, sotred and eaten over the coming year.
