Mark Alsweiler returns with a solo show ‘Candle Mountain’.

A series of paintings and works on paper.

Recently, I started making small drawings and paper studies from my source material, photos collected from everyday living in a Metropolitan area. In the past, I would combine parts of this material, often for backgrounds, and then add figures and other figurative elements to help construct a painting. I realised these drawing studies could stand on their own as works. They have been a stepping stone into these new paintings which lean more toward abstraction and reduction.

Mark Alsweiler (b. 1983, Aotearoa New Zealand) is an artist based in Naarm / Melbourne who works across painting, drawing and sculpture. His work involves the collecting and repurposing of the every day, often abstracting material sourced from an immediate built environment.
